A Priority vs. Priorities
In my previous post, I shared the thrilling news of my upcoming move to Switzerland—a significant life change that promises new adventures and challenges. As I navigate the complexities of preparing documentation, packing up over a decade of life, and saying goodbyes to everything old, my usual writing schedule has inevitably taken a back seat.
Despite these new routine breaking activities, I remain committed to publishing a post each month throughout 2024. This commitment challenges me not to sideline any of my priorities, regardless of how my focus shifts. Balancing these priorities raises a crucial issue: how can we effectively manage multiple priorities, ensuring that none are neglected even as our circumstances dramatically change?
Vote vs. Bet
Choosing tasks that yield the highest output—whether in joy, financial return, or personal growth—seems a straightforward solution. However, this approach oversimplifies the complexities of life’s priorities, often overlooking the long-term benefits for immediate gains.
Consider this blog, for instance. On the surface, the immediate returns don’t compare to the demands of relocating internationally. Yet, documenting my little journey, from the mundane to the monumental, not only enriches my experience but also catalyzes further personal growth. It was, after all, my reflections here that gave me the long-needed nudge to seize the job opportunity abroad—a small input that led to significant life changes. In the realm of chaos theory, they say a butterfly flapping its wings in Brazil could set off a tornado in Texas - something similar happened here.
Problem is that we can’t predict every outcome. What we can do, is choosing to view our actions as either votes towards the life we want to lead or bets on potential new paths.
Placing a Vote: This method involves commitments that incrementally enhance our well-being, like regular exercise or nurturing relationships. These are the investments we make in our daily happiness and health.
Placing a Bet: Then there are the gambles we take on less certain outcomes, like starting a new project or moving to a new country. These may not always pay off, but they promise the possibility of significant reward.
My blog represents both: a routine that hones my writing and expands my comfort zone, and a gamble on sharing my voice with the world. Each post might not change the course of my life, but collectively, they keep me moving forward, exploring new ideas, and challenging myself.
What actually is a priority?
The term ‘priority’ implies an order of importance where tasks should be tackled sequentially from most to least critical. This often makes sense practically, but I propose a potentially controversial perspective: a task either is a priority, or it isn’t.
For tasks with a clear sequence—like a craftsman building a house or a neurosurgeon cutting up some poor person’s brain—the order of operations is often non-negotiable. However, managing life’s complexities isn’t always so linear. Human lives, unlike mechanical assembly or intricate surgeries, involve multifaceted decisions that don’t necessarily follow a straightforward priority queue.
Instead of adhering strictly to a predefined hierarchy of tasks, consider the practicality of life’s demands. Ask yourself: How can you advance all important aspects of your life simultaneously? This approach challenges the conventional wisdom of prioritization, advocating for a more flexible and holistic management of life’s many demands.
The goal is not just to organize tasks by importance but to strategically manage your engagement across all vital areas—balancing well-being, personal growth, and professional responsibilities. And if the load becomes too heavy? It’s crucial to consciously decide what stays and what can be postponed or delegated, preventing the overwhelm that can paralyze us.
As I continue with my preparations and embrace the new chapters awaiting in Switzerland, I’m committed to this platform—not just as a task to be checked off each month, but as a vital part of my little journey and growth.
